AS IS (Emerald St., Philadelphia) is a site-specific, time-based, documentary project dealing with vacant space, urban development, painting, participation, chance and change. This multi-media work foregrounds a series of events that took place upon the insertion of a painting into a vacant lot, just steps away from the Little Berlin gallery space. The painting, depicting the facade of an old factory building, was installed just beside this same building, offering to the public a strange doubling of space and thus an opportunity for a kind of self reflection. Pomerantz's installation poses questions about vacant space (is it really vacant?), the relationship between sanctioned public art and vernacular public expression, the meaning of place in a rapidly developing urban landscape, opportunities for communal reflexivity, and possibilities of audience beyond the art space.
